Land O Pines. June First. Be There!

I’ve just gotten word that on June 1st, there will be a surprise! Our source of this info will not tell us what this surprise is, but she says that it will be a fun day! She says it’s not something you can physically hold or something, but definitely a surprise.

We will update you on any more information if we get some.

Farewell for now, Reader.

Land O Pines Timeline Of History

Hey guys! It’s me, Justin, again, and since Hanna isn’t here to do the Timeline of History, I will! The show MUST go on!

1986

Land O’Pines celebrated its 25th birthday with a week of festive activities including:

  • opening and reviewing the contents of the original cornerstone canister
  • organizing a new safe-deposit box to be re-buried behind the original cornerstone – to be opened in 2011: 25 years later!
  • The Land O’Pines official logo and mascot changed from “Piners” to “Pirates,” and a huge celebration was held to welcome all “Pirates” on board the great Pirate Ship!

1994

Additional renovations made to 2 large classrooms

  • They were converted to kindergarten classrooms.
  • This was the first time Land O’Pines had Kindergarten through Grade 8.
  • New Howell Middle School opened taking grades 7 & 8.
  • Land O’Pines now a K-6 school.

The LOP logo and mascot were once the “PINERS???” I’m glad it changed to “Pirates!”

LOP NJ ASK Tests

If you didn’t know, yesterday was the start of the 5th Grade NJ ASK. NJ ASK stands for “New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge.” These tests are like the climax of a story for 3rd – 5th graders. When I was in third grade, my teacher started preparing us for NJ ASK only about 1 month into school (but it paid off… Thanks Ms. Stratton!)! For 3rd and 5th graders, the NJ ASK you take are Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics. In 4th, though, it’s both of those plus Science.

The test is designed to see what you’re good at. It will also challenge you, to see if you can write prompts about unusual things, or understand a wordy Open-Ended Response in Math. Like I said, the test is designed to challenge you.

For all the first and second graders, you’re lucky this year. But for third, fourth and fifth graders, I wish you good luck!

Hats On Results!

Hats On Day went on with a big success! A lot of people donated and tons of people were wearing hats! Overall the school raised $1,553.25 for kids with cancer.  But in the past 5 years the school has raised $10,813.20.  Just think how many people we are helping by doing this.  hank you to the people who donated and participated by wearing a hat! Also an extra big thank you to Mr. Gredder for organizing this whole event!

Mrs. Silber's class participated in Hats On Day...did you?

LOP’s Timeline of History

We decided to start something new here on the Land O’ Pines News section.  We decided that every week we would give out 2 years of information about the school from 1961-1999.  This way you can know more abut our school’s history.

1961- The School Opened:

  • Housed students in grades 5, 6, 7, & 8
  • Was considered exclusively an upper-elementary grade school
  • Students attended from Land O’Pines, Aldrich, Southard, Newbury, and Ramtown sending districts
  • All administration offices were located at Land O’Pines: Superintendent of Schools, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Pupil Personnel Services, Principal, Vice Principal, Supervisors, Maintenance Department and Transportation Department.

1972- First Major addition:

  • New Media Center, Cafeteria, and offices
  • Grade levels expanded to now include grades 1-8

Back on Track

Spring break is over.  It is time to get back on track, so don’t forget about upcoming events.  Don’t forget stuff like tests and the book fair.

If you forget your money the first day, you might get another chance! The book fair starts on Wednesday and ends on Friday. If you miss the book fair on Friday but sorry that is the last day unless a parent brings it , try to bring your cash or a check in a wallet or envelope so someone knows its yours if you drop it or lose it.  You can come and your parent can come also so don’t forget about going to the Book Fair.

Hats on Day is Friday on the 13th. It is to help support children with cancer so don’t forget your dollar! You will receive a sticker on Friday to because you donated the dollar.

Stay on track and don’t get lost and forget about all the events!

READ!

Daryl Cobb’s Writing Adventure!

Today, the author Daryl Cobb (mentioned in another one of our articles) came to our school for a presentation on writing stories.  He was a lot of fun to see!  He told us some of the good tips to use when writing a book, and what it’s like to be an author sometimes (he sends it to the publisher, the publisher sends it to him, he sends it back, etc. etc. etc.).  Daryl also did funny demonstrations with us.  For me, he did a demonstration when it was Christmas time (though at first he said it was Thanksgiving :D) and a person from the audience went up and was a helper.  You were having 40 guests over and it was 15 minutes before they came.  Your “mom” took out some cookies and put them on the drying rack.  “She” said not to touch them, but you take one while she’s upstairs getting ready.  As you get ready to eat it, you hear footsteps and quickly eat the cookie.  In your hurry, you drop a melted chocolate chip on your white Christmas shirt!  In the end, the solution is that you put on a sweater, and when “Mom” asks why your wearing it you say “Because I’m cold.”  It was a lot of fun to see him come, and I hope we can see him again at LOP!
